Matt is best known for his work laying down the grooves with Celtic super-group Mabon and uptempo bluegrass group Ginge and Celloboi whose take on tunes runs in a similar vein to Hayseed Dixie's.

Matt Downer first found bass at the age of 17 and soon fell in love with it. Soon after this he attended the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he attained a Bmus Hons (Jazz Studies) specialising in electric and upright bass.

During his time studying at the college Matt sudied with Paula Gardiner (Head of Jazz), Dudley Phillips (Bill Withers, Mica Paris) and Steve Watts (Django Bates). While studying Matt also took part in the Erasmus exchange to the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona where he stayed for six months studying with Horacio Fumero.

Matt has worked as a freelance bass player since leaving college in 2007 and is at home in a variety of styles including Jazz, Rock, Pop, Celtic Latin, Rockabilly and Bluegrass.

Matt draws his inspiration from bass players such as James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, Ray Brown, Danny Thompson and Edgar Meyer and has performed throughout Britain and Europe extensively including the Welsh Proms In ST Davids Hall, Celtica Festival in the Italian Alps, Lorient Intereltic Festival in Brittany and also Ollin Kan festival in Mexico City to name but a few.
